Love

In the Chinese culture, the butterfly symbolizes love. According to an old Chinese legend, butterflies are a symbol of the undying bond between lovers. It is a common practice for newlyweds to receive a gift with a butterfly symbol on it on their wedding day; it is meant to remind the couple of the energy of love. The Chinese also believe that the fluttering from flower to flower symbolizes a good social life for the young.

Knowledge & Wisdom

In some cultures, butterflies are a symbol of knowledge and wisdom. Butterflies carry pollen from flower to flower so some cultures relate this activity to wise men spreading their wisdom and knowledge from person to person and helping them grow.

Dreams

Dream interpreters have several meaning for the presence of butterflies in dreams. Some teach that if you simply see a butterfly in your dream, it means that you need to settle down in life. If you catch or kill a butterfly in your dream, it symbolizes that you are superficial, and if you see two butterflies in your dream, it represents a long and happy marriage.

Bad Omens

While many cultures associate the charms of the butterfly with various positive symbols, other cultures believe that the butterfly symbolizes bad omens. In medieval times, a flock of butterflies was a bad omen that predicted an upcoming epidemic or war. In ancient times, Celts believed that if you saw a butterfly flying at night, it meant impending death. Some early Americans followed this Celtic tradition by believing that if a white butterfly circled a person, it meant death was certain - bad news for sure!

Christianity

In contrast, the Christian religion has long held that the butterfly symbolizes the resurrection of Jesus Christ. While in the cocoon, the caterpillar seems dead; but later, the butterfly emerges more powerful and beautiful than before. And just as Jesus ascended into heaven, the butterfly now too can fly into the heavens with its new set of wings. In the Christian religion, the metamorphosis of the butterfly also symbolizes the spiritual evolution that Christians go through when become Christian.

Transformation & Change

That leads us to the most common and obvious symbol of butterflies for modern society: transformation. The butterfly's life is one of transformation through the impressive process of metamorphosis. Many people believe that the butterfly's transformation symbolizes change in a person's life. The cocoon phase can be translated as introspection or reflection with the person emerging from the cocoon metamorphosed into a different person. Butterflies can teach us a lesson to accept change in our lives as easily as a butterfly does.

<![CDATA[Fascinating Facts About Butterfly Wings]]> http://www.wingsandthings.biz/blog/butterflywings/ Urania Ripheus - Sunset Moth Macro Photography

Butterfly Wings: Fascinating Besides Beautiful

There are several things that make butterfly wings remarkable besides their captivating beauty. Consider for example what we can learn from our macro photography pages: the colors of butterfly wings are made from tiny scales that are actually modified feathers.

Hawk moths can beat their wings powerfully enough to hover in the air like hummingbirds. The world\'s largest moth is the Attacus Atlas of southeast Asia - a species within the Saturnidae family - and is almost as large as a pair of human hands - they are sometimes mistaken for bats at nighttime and the flapping of their wings is almost audible to human ears. The rare Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing (Ornithoptera Alexandrae) from Papua New Guinea is the largest butterfly in the world - it sports a wingspan of ten inches. The scales of butterfly wings are flexible and self-cleaning! Butterfly wing colors often change hue - or even color - when wet. Pigments of the scales on their wings come either from chemical pigments such as melanin or from plants and waste that build up during metamorphosis. Butterfly wing scales are formed by bulbous, modified feathers. Depending on the spacing between the scales of a butterfly\'s wings, reflective light waves interface to the degree that some wavelengths are cancelled out while others are enhanced - like the patterns on a soap bubble. When emerging from the chrysalis, a butterflys wings are soft and flexible. If it does not extend the wings soon enough or wide enough, they will harden with folds that will cripple the butterfly and keep it from being able to fly the rest of its life. The drying process only takes about an hour. Each wing moves in a slightly circular fashion with the hind wing subtly behind the fore wing - which creates the fluttering effect of butterflies. The pattern of the veins vary from species to species but the patterns usually remain the same within each family. In Medieval times, butterflies were called flutter-bys because of their unusual flying patterns caused by this offset beating pattern. Their zigzag fluttering makes their flight path unpredictable and serves to protect them from predators. Butterflies need sunlight in order to fly - their bodies must maintain a temperature of about 53 degrees Fahrenheit or 30 degrees Celsius or their flying muscles will not function properly. Eyespots protect butterflies because birds will attack the eyespot first. Since butterflies can fly with up to 70% of their wings missing, a detached eyespot will still allow the butterfly to escape to safety. Some eyespots are hidden from view until the forewing is pushed forward so that red eyes appear and surprise the predator long enough to make an escape. The resting position of the wings of moths is referred to as airplane position. Pilots have reported seeing Monarch Butterflies as high as 10,000 feet! The Monarch (Danaus Plexippus) migrates 1,800 miles (3,000 km) annually - they fly from Mexico to a home east of the Rocky Mountains. Lepidoptera is derived from the Greek word for scale or wing because the most obvious feature that separates them from other insects is their scaled wings. Special bristles on the hind wings of moths hold the wings together for flight. In some species, these hooks are very strong and keep the wings from separating. Some very few butterflies have this same feature. Butterfly hind wings overlap (from underneath) the fore wings so that they can support the fore wings in flight. Most butterfly eggs are laid on specific host plants; however, some butterflies lay their eggs in flight - particularly butterflies whose caterpillars feed on grass. Some Nymphalidae species flap and glide to fly rather than flutter.]]>

<![CDATA[Price Match / Quality Match]]> http://www.wingsandthings.biz/blog/pricematch/ morpho deidamia

Calling All Butterfly Friends!

As I have been searching all over the internet for new butterflies, moths, and exotic insects, I have noticed an ever growing online trend: crazy prices! I've seen similar products selling for as much as 300% cheaper than similar vendors! That's just crazy! We've decided to pass along the savings to you - but first, a word of explanation:

Part of the reason this price gap is growing so dramatically is because of our crazy economy - some vendors are simply desperate to sell their products. Part of the reason this is happening is because there is a large difference in real butterfly products sold by various vendors. For instance, some butterfly vendors sell "A1" quality butterflies (essentially perfect specimens) and other vendors sell "A1-" quality butterflies (may be missing antennae or may have a minor slit in a wing) and other vendors sell "A2" quality butterflies (clearly damaged). Incidentally, we can sell all three: A1 quality displays are sold as "Collectors Mounts"; A1- are sold as our default mount (this is true of almost all quality vendors; usually, these are perfect specimens lacking an antennae - we rarely sell butterflies with slit wings, although this can happen with age and usually isn't noticeable by the average person); A2 displays are sold as Riker Mounts.

While these designations can be quite helpful, there is a growing trend among ebay vendors and disreputable butterfly farmers to sell poor quality ("A2") butterflies as "A1-" products - or to sell poor quality butterflies for the cheaper price while representing that the display is high quality. Sometimes this is not disclosed; sometimes it is - however, when it is disclosed, there is a growing trend to "define" "A1-" quality somewhere in the fine print as a butterfly that is essentially "A2" quality. To be fair, some of these folks just don't speak English very well and their country holds different quality standards than American customers hold. This means that an experienced customer may pay for a poor quality butterfly under the mistaken belief that he or she is paying for a near imperfect butterfly - RATS!.

All of this highlights why you should be purchasing from a high quality vendor. To make that happen, we will price match other vendors who are selling similar products. True - we carry many products that no one else carries so there is nobody to price match with! However, for our displays, you can price match all day long. Here is what you need to do: (1) check the style of display; acrylic boxes are more expensive to produce than wooden displays - this means that you need to match acrylic box prices with acrylic box pricing and wooden display prices with wooden display pricing. There are varying qualities of wood as well but we will probably ignore that issue. (2) send us a link of the product that you are looking at (ebay or similar auction typed stores are exempted unless the price advertised is a FIXED price. (3) give us some time to verify that the vendor is legit, the listing is legit, and that we carry the same product. The end result? We will price match anything we reasonably can! If we are unable to price match for whatever reason (sometimes getting exotic butterflies properly through customs can increase our wholesale purchase pricing - which can sometimes be evaded by unscrupulous ebay vendors), we will send you a coupon code for your next purchase with us or we will send you a free product for your trouble! If we can price match, we will send you a coupon code for the specific display that you are looking at so that you can purchase the display at the lowest possible price.

Whatever the end result, you win!]]>

<![CDATA[Is Real Butterfly Art Underused in Hospital Décor?]]> http://www.wingsandthings.biz/blog/hospital-decor/ morpho swirl

A peaceful and serene environment for patients in hospitals is an absolute necessity. Accordingly, modern hospitals go to great lengths to create a pleasant and peaceful environment. This is only reasonable after all - every one of their patients is suffering in one way or another so trying to keep them calm and relaxed should be a high priority. Many (if not most) hospitals try to create that pleasant environment by plastering their walls with relatively inexpensive paintings of pastel flowers, modern art, or photographs. That probably is not an especially bad start - although it leaves each hospital totally devoid of any bragging rights over their unique décor. It is when hospitals move towards their purchases of larger displays that they go south in a hurry. They frequently go to great lengths to expend large amounts of money on one or more large pieces of modern art, geometric sculptures, or some other in vogue (though not especially appreciated by the masses) form of artistic expression posing as art. One has to wonder - why don't hospitals save thousands of dollars by moving in another direction by displaying something instantly popular, intuitively calming, and deeply symbolic? Butterflies score on every count.

Intuitively Symbolic

Butterflies are an iconic symbol of new beginnings. Where could one possibly hope to better employ this symbol than in a hospital where hundreds and thousands of people recover from life changing experiences? Who needs rejuvenated hope for a new beginning more than someone who has lost a limb from an accident? someone who will suffer a long and painful recovery before returning to their normal life? someone who may have lost a loved one, their health, and their employment after a certain accident? All of these people need some sort of hope for a new beginning in life. There is even a butterfly that brags the possibility of curing a number of children's diseases: the Papilio Dardanus Dardanus. It's a beautiful butterfly and there is no reason why it couldn't quickly become an icon of hope for children in the pediatrics wing of any modern hospital. In short, butterflies are deeply symbolic - more so than most any modern art sculpture, geometric display, or even a pastel painting of a flower.

Butterfly Flights

Large displays of dozens, if not hundreds of butterflies can adorn the entryways of hospitals at relatively low cost. True, there is a downside to huge butterfly displays - they can be breathtaking and maybe that is not so good for some hospital patients! While there are not many high quality vendors out there who can do large displays, they can be found and they are worth hiring. Some vendors feature butterfly displays that change from one color to another or that are color coordinated. True - butterflies do fade over time so they have needed replaced every decade or so in the past - but now, you can get UV protected displays that practically alleviate this problem.

3D Sculptures

Traditionally, real butterflies could only be placed on the wall in flat displays. Many interior designers found this to be an intolerable limitation - and understandably so. However, real butterflies on wires make the possibility of three dimensional displays much much greater. Because of this modern innovation, Huge three dimensional butterfly displays can be created with limitless artistic possibilities of expression. Anyone who has ever seen large butterfly displays like these knows that they are instantly popular, they are well liked, and they can be deeply symbolic. Whether "stunning," "gorgeous," or "breathtaking," they create a much nicer atmosphere for hospital patients than stuffy pictures of the local town fifty years ago; they are likely to create a better atmosphere than trendy modern art that needs replaced every decade or so; they may even be more likely to create a better atmosphere than those generic, pastel colored paintings of flowers that adorn nearly every hospital well!

<![CDATA[Which Butterfly Jewelry is Best for You?]]> http://www.wingsandthings.biz/blog/whichbutterflyjewelry/

WHICH BUTTERFLY JEWELRY IS BEST FOR YOU?

In recent years, it has become quite popular for various vendors to advertise and sell real butterfly jewelry. Although many vendors are careful to only sell jewelry made from butterflies born, raised, and passed away naturally on humane butterfly farms, some vendors are not so careful so if you are environmentally sensitive, make sure to purchase from an environmentally sensitive business - like us!

Historically speaking, there have been three types of butterfly jewelry on the market: laminated wings, wings encased in cases covered with glass, and wings dipped in resin. All of these are typically used for earrings but they are occasionally found for use in necklaces as well. Only recently has a fourth version of real butterfly jewelry arrived in the marketplace. Before addressing our newbie, let's consider the advantages and disadvantages of traditional real butterfly jewelry.

Laminated Wings

While laminated butterfly jewelry varies somewhat in quality, the biggest difference that you may want to consider is selection. All laminated products yellow with age so prolonged exposure to the sun will eventually render the jewelry unattractive - prolonged exposure to the sun will slowly fade the colors on the original butterfly wing as well. If you are wearing them in primarily indoor venues, they should last quite a while before yellowing and losing their beauty. Although they are fairly durable as you might expect, the lamination will eventually start to curl or peel apart slightly and will produce a frayed edge. Of course, with lamination comes glossy texture, so you also lose some of the natural beauty of the butterfly - but not much. Generally speaking though, these are minor critiques - the big differences between vendors is their selection of butterfly wings and in the quality of lamination. Look for a vendor that carries dozens of species rather than only a few. Of all butterfly jewelry, this type is often the least expensive, so finding a vendor with a great selection and a good price is not too difficult. We will be carrying these products soon - and we will have not only the largest selection available anywhere in the world, we will be using high quality lamination.

Wings Encased in Glass Cases

Real butterfly jewelry encased in glass cases makes durability a non-issue when compared to laminated products. Although some few vendors carry cheap cases that may even unexpectedly pop open if you are not careful, most butterfly jewelry sold in this fashion comes in attractive (usually silver) cases that surround a portion of the butterfly wing. This preserves the natural beauty of the butterfly wing for a very long time. However, jewelry of this nature almost never allows you to see the entire butterfly wing and often produces a fairly heavy earring. Further, when real butterfly wings are used, prolonged exposure to the sun will slowly fade until the original colors are lost forever - this is a problem with laminated products as well. Despite the fact that UV protected acrylic sheets are available on the market, it appears that no vendor uses this technology to make this type of butterfly jewelry last longer or to make the earrings less heavy. In short, your taste in which cases are the most attractive is the biggest factor when looking for butterfly jewelry encased in glass cases - the selection of butterfly wings is less crucial with this genre of jewelry because the whole wing is almost never used so many people will not even notice that the jewelry is made from real butterfly wings. Of all butterfly jewelry, this type is often the most expensive. We do not currently carry this form of jewelry.

Butterfly Wings in Resin or Lucite Cases

Real butterfly jewelry dipped in resin or Lucite varies drastically in quality. Some butterfly wings are so badly damaged in the process that you can barely tell that it is a butterfly wing encased in a plastic coating at all. Others preserve the beauty of the wing fabulously. Generally speaking, the better the product, the higher the price; there are some exceptions but you will have to shop around to find them. Although this product is more durable than the laminated products, it has the same problems with discoloration - both the resin/Lucite coating and the butterfly wing discolor over time - and it tends to make a heavy earring as well. Few vendors offer much selection with this product so you may not have the same ability to be picky about which species that you would like to wear. We do not carry this form of jewelry.

The Newbie: Natural Looking Real Butterfly Wing Earrings

We are the only vendor in the world that offers these fabulous products! Like the laminated wings described above, this product features whole butterfly wings rather than a small portion of the wing, which allows for a better view of the butterfly's natural beauty. There are at least two big differences between the treated butterfly earrings and the standard laminated earring: first, the butterfly wing (in its pristine natural state) is exposed for viewing, which uniquely preserves the natural beauty of the butterfly wing just as it looked when the butterfly was alive; second, this product is generally best for nice dinners, formal occasions, or special gatherings - they are absolutely perfect for weddings - rather than every day use. We currently carry this product but do not have it listed online - if you are interested in these best of the best, high quality products, let us know and we will hook you up!

Two Types

Whether you are interested in earrings, hair clips, butterfly roses (butterflies mounted on a floral stem), or other custom jewelry, you should be aware that they come in two varieties: "formal wear" and "casual wear."

Formal Wear (a.k.a. Natural)

Formal occasion butterflies have only been through half of the unique preservation process. This means that the jewelry exposed to the viewer's eye will look precisely like it did when the butterfly was alive! They are thoroughly gorgeous and absolutely exquisite! This also means that the jewelry is more delicate - the wings are liable to scratches and rubs and are more likely to break than any occasion jewelry (see below). Although the wings are bendable, touching the wings can rub off scales and make the butterfly look aged so it is best to only touch the clip portion of the hair clip (or boutonniere) or the earring post as much as reasonably possible. This type of jewelry is referred to as "special occasion" for two reasons: first, this is an absolutely stunning new product that will dazzle your friends and second, because the real wing is exposed to touch, they may not be suitable for more extensive activities. Consider these your Cinderella slippers!

Casual Wear (a.k.a. Glossy)

The "casual wear" preservation process makes the butterflies flexible enough to be handled (with reasonable care) and lightly waterproof. These butterflies are intended for regular (non-athletic use in mild weather). You should note that with some species, the natural coloring of the butterfly wings does darken somewhat during the plasticization process so look at the final product picture or speak with a specialist before ordering. With some species, this process actually enhances the look of the butterfly wing (imagine a stain glass butterfly wing) but usually, you are best to look for the natural coating.

Hair Clips

Because of our unique technology, earrings are not the only possibility - hair clips can also be made of real butterflies (antennae included if you want) and there are also real "butterfly roses." If you want to get noticed, these hair clips will surely not fail you - brand new to the market and designed to look like a butterfly just landed in your hair to take a rest, this is a very unique hair product. Add to your hair clip a butterfly rose and you are ready for your wedding reception too!

Remember, although this new butterfly jewelry is not as durable as other forms of jewelry, damages are often repairable so these are not "disposable" items that you throw away after your first use. Nevertheless, you should not expect this jewelry to last a lifetime. However, if you order a hair clip or butterfly rose for some special occasion that you want to remember, we can custom preserve the butterfly in a display to mount on your wall so they can be preserved for a lifetime.

Care of Natural Looking Real Butterfly Wing Earrings

Another small con: care of this jewelry is a little more intensive than other forms of real butterfly jewelry (it is not difficult though, just unfamiliar) so before making your customized order, make sure to read up on how to care for your stunning earrings - that way, they will last longer and retain the natural and stunning beauty of the real butterfly.
