Did You Know?
The ever spectacular morpho butterflies have a surprising method of camouflage. One would think that these brilliantly colored butterflies would be easy targets for birds right? Wrong! Birds are attracted to the shiny, metallic colors of all morpho species; however, because of their "fluttery" flight, the reflective coloring only shows up in quick flashes to birds while in flight. Thus, the bird keeps flying towards the spot where the butterfly was a moment before rather than towards where it is right now. Using this delay in time, the butterflies can then find a tree to hide in - and their underside is colored and designed to look like bark so when they land in resting position, they are camouflaged again. If all else fails, there are eyes pots on the underside of the wing, which allows the butterfly yet one more chance to escape the predator bird!
Details
Morpho Cypris was named after the Greek goddess Aphrodite for good reason! This brilliantly metallic butterfly is an instant favorite, featuring the very distinctive triangular wrinkles on the edges of the wings that produce a scallop-esque look, the white bar, and the distinctive dot pattern on the hind wings. More reflective than most other morpho species, this highly decorated beauty will catch anyone's attention quickly.
You will receive the specimen pictured at the left. Please note the very minor imperfections on the wings (the picture on your monitor will probably show the butterfly larger than it really is and will therefore show imperfections more than you would see them in real life.
If you would like this butterfly to be in a UV protected display box, we can customize the order to allow for that difference. UV protected acrylic boxes are very slightly tinted in color but will allow for the butterfly to be preserved in its original color, even when displayed in direct sunlight, for many more years than a normal display could allow for.
